☕ Ethiopian Coffee and Date Snack
ቡና ተምር — Buna Temr
Ethiopian Coffee and Date Snack — Ethiopian spiced coffee served alongside Medjool or dried Ethiopian dates. The Muslim community's coffee ceremony accompaniment and iftar opener — the date's sweetness and the coffee's intensity create a perfect pairing.
Coffee with dates is the simple, ancient pairing of the Ethiopian Muslim community — the coffee that Ethiopia gave the world, paired with the date that Arabia gave the world, meeting in the land that connects both traditions.
Ingredients
Equipment: Coffee pot (jebena), Small cups (sini)
- 4 small cups Ethiopian spiced coffee
- 8—12 Medjool dates or dried Ethiopian dates
Spiced Coffee: brew strong Ethiopian coffee with a pinch of cardamom
Method
- Brew Ethiopian coffee very strong with a pinch of cardamom.
- Serve in small Ethiopian coffee cups (sini).
- Place dates alongside — 2—3 per person.
- Eat a date, then sip the coffee — the sequence is traditional.
Chef Tips
- The date is eaten first — its sweetness prepares the palate for the bitter coffee.
- Ethiopian coffee with cardamom is the Muslim community's version of the coffee ceremony.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Serving without dates — loses the pairing logic.
The Science
The natural sugars in dates (primarily glucose and fructose) coat the taste receptors before the coffee arrives — reducing the bitter perception of the coffee's chlorogenic acids and caffeine. This is the physiological reason the combination works so well.

Cultural Note
Coffee and dates are the oldest pairing in Ethiopian Islamic food culture — the coffee that flows from Kaffa through Arabia and back to Ethiopia, the date that travels the reverse direction. At iftar, breaking the fast with a date and coffee is the meeting of the two great food cultures of Ethiopia's Muslim community.
