The Hadiya people cultivate barley and sorghum in the highlands south of Hosanna. Mich is their traditional thick barley porridge, enriched with vegetables and served with fresh buttermilk — a complete meal from the agricultural tradition.
Ingredients
Equipment: Saucepan
- 1 cup barley flour
- 2 cups water
- 1 carrot — diced
- 1 small potato — diced
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
Serving: fresh buttermilk or yogurt
Method
- Cook carrot and potato in water until soft.
- Whisk in barley flour gradually.
- Cook stirring 15—20 minutes until thick.
- Season with pepper and salt.
- Serve with buttermilk alongside.
