🌯 Kenyan Chicken Wrap
Wrap ya Kuku
Kenyan Chicken Wrap — spiced grilled chicken, kachumbari, sliced avocado, and garlic mayo wrapped in a warm chapati or flour tortilla. The portable Nairobi lunch — combining the traditional chapati with modern wrap culture.
The Kenyan chicken wrap is the natural meeting point between the chapati tradition and urban café culture. The chapati makes a superior wrap — thicker, more flavourful, and more structurally sound than a plain tortilla. Filled with spiced grilled chicken, fresh kachumbari, and avocado, it is the perfect portable Nairobi lunch.
Ingredients
Equipment: Pan or grill, Knife
- 2 chapatis or large flour tortillas
- 300g chicken breast — spiced and grilled
- 2 tbsp kachumbari
- 1 ripe avocado — sliced
- 2 tbsp garlic mayo
- 2 lettuce leaves
- ½ tsp paprika
- ½ tsp cumin
- salt
Method
- Season chicken with paprika, cumin, and salt. Grill until cooked through. Slice thinly.
- Warm chapatis briefly in a dry pan.
- Spread garlic mayo over each chapati.
- Layer: lettuce, chicken strips, kachumbari, avocado.
- Roll firmly, tucking in the sides.
- Cut diagonally and serve immediately.
Chef Tips
- Warm the chapati before assembling — it is more pliable and less likely to crack.
- Do not overfill — it becomes impossible to roll.
- The chapati is what makes this Kenyan — use it instead of tortilla where possible.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Cold chapati — cracks when rolling.
- Over-filling — structural failure.
The Science
Warming the chapati reactivates the gluten network, making it more flexible and elastic — this is why warm chapati rolls without cracking while a cold one splits.
