🥑 Tanzanian Avocado Smoothie
Smoothi ya Parachichi
Tanzanian Avocado Smoothie — ripe Tanzanian avocado blended with banana, coconut milk, honey, and lime into a thick, creamy, intensely nutritious drink. Tanzania grows exceptional avocados — this is the most indulgent way to drink them.
Tanzania is a major avocado producer, and the avocado smoothie has become one of the most popular health drinks at urban juice bars. The Tanzanian version uses coconut milk for richness, banana for natural sweetness, and lime to prevent browning — producing a thick, green, completely satisfying drink.
Ingredients
Equipment: Blender
- 1 large ripe avocado — flesh only
- 1 ripe banana
- 300ml cold coconut milk
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp lime juice
- Pinch of salt
- 1 cup ice
Method
- Add all ingredients to a blender.
- Blend on high for 60 seconds until completely smooth.
- Taste — adjust honey and lime.
- Serve immediately.
Chef Tips
- Add lime juice first — it prevents the avocado from browning in the blender.
- Frozen banana makes it even thicker and colder.
- Serve immediately — avocado oxidises quickly once blended.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waiting to serve — turns brown and loses flavour.
- Under-ripe avocado — bitter and watery.
The Science
See KEN229 for avocado browning science. Blending ruptures avocado cell walls, releasing polyphenol oxidase — which rapidly oxidises in contact with air. Adding lime juice immediately inhibits this enzyme through pH reduction, maintaining the green colour for longer.
